Strategies to Mitigate Implicit Bias and Promote an Ethos of Care in the Research Enterprise: A Convening

Spring 2024

Project Overview

Project Coordinator & Sponsor: Emily Skop, Risha Raquelle

Responsible Department: Geography and Environmental Studies

Total GAF Funding: $4,000

Themes: Student Involvement, A Culture of Care, Inclusion

Goal: Increase student involvement in BAJEDI activities through an undervalued topic in the sciences: care; further education and outreach through canvas curriculum;catalyze scalable practices into diverse institutional and organizational contexts, especially at minority-serving and emerging research institutions.

Impact: Provide a unique opportunity to connect with student researchers and create on-the-ground understandings of the oftentimes abstract ideas found in the literature on cultures of care; deliver an environment where student researchers and Dr. Skop can maximize mentorship, facilitate interaction, and encourage active and experiential learning outside the classroom; and build a deeper and more rooted knowledge of academia through community-based research on the research landscapes of higher education.
