Sugar Cane Processing

Bookstore Sustainable Paper Pilot

Fall 2016
UCCS Bookstore

Project Overview

Project Coordinator(s): Grace Gibbens, Joey Vijayam

Project Sponsor: Paul Deniston, Retail Services

Responsible Department: UCCS Bookstore

Themes: Zero Waste, Conservation

Goal: To replace standard printing paper in the UCCS Bookstore with bagasse paper. Begasse paper is compostable, recyclable, and biodegradable paper made from the dry, fibrous material byproduct that remains after processing sugar cane or sorghum stalks.

Impact: Promote sustainable, tree-free paper alternatives while helping to reduce forest degradation and carbon emissions released during traditional pulp-based paper and sugar cane/sorghum processing methods.
