The Butterfly Garden is a garden meant to attract and sustain a variety of butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. The garden does this by providing nectar and pollen producing plants for adult butterflies and essential food for young caterpillars. A butterfly garden needs a variety of annual and perennial plants and flowers along with trees for shelter from predators and select vegetation for caterpillars. Monarch caterpillars, in particular, have a symbiotic relationship with the milkweed plant, as it is the only plant that the butterflies use to lay their eggs and it is the main source of food for developing young caterpillars. Increasing the number of pollinator animals on our campus has incredible benefits as our campus continues production of food through the student garden and UCCS Greenhouse.
