KFL Office Supply Recycling

Spring 2019-Zero Waste

Project Overview

KFL Team Green strives to reduce waste produced within the library as well as assist waste reduction efforts campus-wide. In the KFL Sustainability Plan, adopted in late 2018, Team Green identified Sustainable KFL Practices. The first practice, titled Recycling & Composting, includes an action item to “continue to reevaluate the need for additional alternative recycling solutions.” They sought to create a recycling stream for single use pens, pen caps, markers, marker caps, permanent markers, permanent marker caps, mechanical pencils, as well as binders. These office tools are composed of a variety of materials such as plastic, metal, and vinyl. This combination of materials makes them inappropriate for traditional recycling streams. They sought to test the campus' interest in recycling these materials through a trial of offering this service through the Kraemer Family Library using zero waste recycling containers purchased through Staples. During the marketing of this new recycling effort they also renewed promotion of their toner cartridge and battery recycling program in hopes to increase those volumes as well.
