Secure Bike Storage – Alpine Garage

This project is supporting the reduction of single-occupancy vehicles (SOV), encouraging active commuting, and fostering a more bike friendly campus. It is also solving bike-specific goals of providing a secure storage solution to encourage students to bring their bike to campus, increasing the amount of high-quality bike parking, and protecting the investments of our students. Per our 2017 Bicycle Friendly University feedback, UCCS needs to “increase the amount of high-quality bicycle parking at popular destinations such as transit stops, classroom/lab buildings, dorms, recreation and entertainment facilities, and retail and office locations on campus.” This project is an installation of a secure bike storage in the first level of Alpine Garage. This location is accessible to residential students and commuter students, and if funded, will be used as proof-of-concept to find other funding sources to install additional secure bike storage across the campus. Over the past couple of years, UCCS has seen an increase in bicycle theft and vandalism. Some bikes that have been vandalized utilize the recommended u-lock, but are being taken apart for valuable parts, leaving the bike unrideable. To combat this, residential students are deciding to either leave their bikes at home. By not bringing a bike to campus, students rely heavily on their personal vehicles to get to east and west campuses. When students bring their bikes into their residential halls, it results in additional costs to repaint where tires marked the walls, and sometimes causes fire hazards due to space constraints in the rooms. This project will be a partnership between the Green Action Fund, the UCCS Bicycle Advocacy Committee, Parking & Transportation Services, Planning, Design & Construction, Auxiliary Services, Facilities Services, Residence Life & Housing, Office of Information Technology, and the Office of Sustainability.
