Sustainable Roof for the Farm and Demonstration House
Project Sponsor: Konrad Schlarbaum
Responsible Department: Office of Sustainability
Total GAF Allocated Funds: $41,125
Themes: Zero Waste, Education
Goal: Install a hybrid steel/synthetic-rubber shingle roof on The Farm and Sustainability Demonstration House.
Impact: Twelve million tons of asphalt shingles are disposed of each year in the U.S. As a petroleum product, asphalt shingles leech carcinogenic chemicals into the environment and take 300-400 years to fully decompose. The new hybrid REVIA F Wave shingles have the highest ratings for hail, fire, and wind with an industry-leading 50-year warranty and 5-year hail coverage, therefore significantly reducing waste generated from the replacement of shingles after major weather events. When disposed, the hybrid shingles decompose in 50-80 years. Sustainability tours featuring the new roofs have been hosted.
